Returnal dlc6/11/2023 ![]() I think most of my disappointment in it could be from coming directly off the base game, where every single boss fight is tense and memorable, whereas this boss just kind of exists. It’s my least favorite boss in the entirety of Returnal, largely because it’s repetitive, but also because all challenge is stripped away if you have a Disgorger. There is a boss that appears every 20 floors, but it’s the same boss and doesn’t do much besides deal more damage, have increased health, and use a slightly altered moveset with each encounter. Unfortunately, with the exception of a rare non-aggressive white-tendrilled beast that teleports you to a bonus room when killed, there really isn’t anything in terms of new enemies in Ascension. Disgorgers are key to clearing some of the harder rooms with larger amounts of enemies, so learning when to save and use them is crucial if you’re looking to rack up as many points as possible. There’s also a powerful new set of items called Disgorgers which temporarily replace your standard weapon with a devastatingly powerful super weapon that simply tears through everything. The points are mostly there for bragging rights on the leaderboards but keeping a high multiplier and clearing rooms quickly also awards you bonus currency to spend on items and upgrades, which incentivizes a more aggressive playstyle. There’s now a dedicated scoring system, giving you points for killing enemies, chaining multiple kills in quick succession, and reaching the exit of each room in record time. Each floor presents a single room with a wave of enemies to defeat, but this time around combat has a few interesting twists. Similar to the base game, dying means starting over from the beginning, which in this case is the first floor. The setup for Ascension is simple: make your way up the tower. In order to access Ascension, players must first progress past the second boss in the base game, which will then allow you to access an otherwise out of reach path at the start of each run, taking you to an impossibly tall tower where the expansion takes place. It’s surprisingly easier than the base game and only clocks in at about 3-4 hours, but what it lacks in quantity it more than makes up for in quality.įor starters, while the Ascension update also brings co-op to the base game, the new area which serves as the bulk of this update’s content is only available while playing solo. While the base game was largely centered around the mystery of the strange planet Atropos, the time loop Selene finds herself stuck in, and the trauma she faced back on Earth, Ascension is fully focused on her rocky relationship with her mother.
